Egads!

I just heard someone say that 50 is the new 30. They may be right. Why is it that these people who lived through the assassination of JFK, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., the Vietnam War, the gas rationing of the early 70s, Nixon’s resignation, etc have such a powerful spirit?
While people of my generation who have been sheltered from war, grew up during the prosperous times of the Clinton administration, and have known more about shopping malls than politics, are depressed and cynical?
Over the last two years I have aligned myself with a group of 50 year-olds and I see a vast difference. Now most of these people had a hippie period in their lives…a time when they were thrown out of restaurants because of their long hair, were spit on by “straights”, boycotted things they considered wrong, and protested wars. They seem to have genuine friendships unlike people of my generation. Woman in their 20s and 30s are meaner than deadly pythons, ready to slay their sisters, and have virtually no female friends. The men, as least those I have met, seem to be callous and shallow.
That is why I am in a relationship with a man nearly twice my age.
As I was typing this I found the answer: We don’t care about anything. We were spoon fed capitalism with a capital “C.” Buy and you will be happy. It didn’t work. We care little about other people, politics, or the world beyond ourselves. My same-age friend Amber recently told me that if I didn’t stop talking politics she would slap me.
I’m going for the other capital “C”…Caring.
Adversity may make one stronger. We inherited a frightening world and instead of trying to make it better, we go shopping.
When we turn 50 they will say we are the new 90. We gave up when we were barely out of diapers.
One final q: Why is it that those people who are in their teens now seem to be so much more attached to the world than we are?
I am trying to “get” it.

Chicken in the Henhouse

I was home today, writing, and at 3 I turned on the teevee so I didn’t miss Ken on Jeopardy! BREAKING NEWS came on instead. A local newsperson was reporting the incident of a AA jet on it’s way to Pittsburg that had turned around to O’hare due to something. A LOUD EXPLOSION! PLUME OF SMOKE!!! According to eye-witness reports. Then an AA spokesperson came on and said that early reports indictated a bird flew into the engine, all passengers were fine, no problems. BUT the news person tried to rachet up the situation suggesting something more nefarious in these terrorist-alert times. The spokesperson said WAIT! And once again explained the bird thing.
How refreshing! The media is like a dog trying to salivate in any news story. They are alarmists! Or is it the BIG ratings they are after?
Also today there was another news story about 3 people being kidnapped in Iraq. Now the story was that they worked for a large Iraqi construction company. How come the actual company was stated? Hmmmmmm. Could that be bi Laden Construction Company?
And one more question. I liked the idea of embeds…in the beginning, but now I am thinking the Vulcans (Bush & his crew) pulled off a media coup. If you put the newspeople, the ones who should be objective about reporting what actually happened, in with the soldiers, people taking orders from the top, well short story…let’s put it this way, are you more likely to report bad things about those you know or those you have no contact with?
